Student bursaries of 500 Euro were offered under the following conditions:
Applicants were of pre-doctoral status (i.e. pre-PhD or equivalent).
Applicants were members of the Society or had applied to become members of the Society.
The applicant was the presenting author of a submitted abstract and was able to defend the aim, results and conclusions of the study.
The student had to send a letter of application, stating why he/she feels that they should be awarded a bursary, as well as details of any other sources of funding that they can access. Curriculum vitae, a copy of the abstract and a letter of recommendation from the supervisor including confirmation of the status of the student were submitted.
Normally, only one studentship is available per Department. In case of more than one student from a Department, the Supervisor/Head of Department ranked the candidates.
Applications were sent to the President of the Society Prof. M. Ennis, by e-mail: m.ennis@qub.ac.uk by 15 January 2006.
Applications were judged by the Bursaries and Awards Committee and in the event of a tie between applicants, the number of bursaries previously granted to the Department was taken into account.

All pre-doctoral students and MD and post doctoral trainees with no more than 3 years post-doctoral research training were eligible for these prestigious awards, which were offered under the following conditions:
The applicant had to submit an abstract as the presenting author and send a letter of application, a copy of the abstract, as well as an extended abstract (4 A4 pages) and CV to the President of the Society by 1 February 2006. The eligibility of the candidates was judged by the Bursaries and Awards Committee, who selected 5 finalists, receiving a certificate and a cash award and/or a prize. The finalists presented their work at a 10 min oral presentation followed by a 5 min discussion during the “Art Hancock Young Investigator Award Symposium”
It is anticipated that the first and second prize winners would be invited to publish their papers in Inflammation Research. The papers will undergo the normal reviewing process. However, if another journal is more suitable for the work, an acknowledgement that the work has been awarded a Young Investigators Award by the EHRS must be included
